If you’re a New Zealand citizen or resident and wish to bring your dependent children to New Zealand for a temporary stay, then you’ll need to get a Dependent Child Visitor Visa for them before their NZ trip. Just like standard visitor visas, these visas allow your child to legally stay in New Zealand to visit and experience this beautiful country.
This visitor visa is similar to standard visas that adults can apply for, except they’re meant for dependent children. If their visa is approved, your child can stay with you in New Zealand for up to 9 months.
The Dependent Child Visitor Visa is a temporary NZ visa, meaning your child must leave New Zealand when their allotted time ends. However, if your child wishes to stay in New Zealand longer, they can apply for a different visa. They may be able to stay longer if they are eligible for a student or work visa.
With this visa, your children can join you in New Zealand and explore the country as visitors. They can also study for a limited time at a New Zealand school.
You should note that children on this visa can only study for three months or less. If your child wishes to study for longer than that, they must be granted a student visa.
You and your child will have to meet a few requirements to be granted a Dependent Child Visitor Visa in NZ.
First, you must be a New Zealand citizen or resident for any of your dependent children to qualify. You must also be the parent of the child coming to NZ.
You will also need to pay an application fee, which can cost around $211 or higher. Luckily, the processing time for this visa is relatively short, with 90% of the visas being processed within 37 days.
Your child will need to meet these requirements:
Correct Age. They will need to be 19 years old or younger. Older children may qualify for other kinds of visas that allow them to visit or live in New Zealand, such as a work visa or a student visa.
Proof Of Identity. You must be able to prove your child’s identity. This can be in the form of one acceptable photo if you choose to apply online or two acceptable photos if you apply physically. You can also use your child’s passport or certificate of identity.
Please note that to be acceptable, photos must:
Please see this page for a full list of all the photo requirements.
Good Health. Your child must be healthy, and you may need to provide a chest x-ray of your child or medical examination documents as proof.
Good Character. Like all visas, the applicant must be of good character. If your child is 17 or older, their character can be proven with Police Certificates. Children aged 16 and younger will not need Police Certificates.
Genuine Intentions. You must have genuine intentions for your child to come and visit you in New Zealand.
Dependency. Your child must be single, and they must depend on you for financial support. Children who are 17 years old and under are typically seen as dependent. However, children who are 18 or 19 years of age may need further proof that they’re dependents.
Children 18-19 years old must not have any children of their own and must be financially dependent on you. This may need to be proven with evidence like documents proving that they’re enrolled in a school or receipts for daily expenses you pay for them.
Enough Funds Or A Sponsorship. Your child must have enough money to live in New Zealand during their stay. Or, they should have a sponsor who can support them.
A Way To Leave. To qualify for a Dependent Child Visitor Visa, your child must have a way to leave NZ once their visa period is up. This can be in the form of a ticket out of New Zealand or enough money to purchase one.
A Dependent Child Visitor Visa can allow you to spend a lovely time with your children in New Zealand. Like with any other visa, it’s important that you understand your opportunities and apply correctly to improve your chances of success.
