New Graduate Work Visa Pathways – Coming in Late 2026

The Immigration New Zealand has announced upcoming changes to graduate work visa options to better align international graduate pathways with New Zealand’s workforce needs. These changes are expected to take effect in late 2026 and aim to support international education while helping graduates transition into employment in New Zealand. (Immigration New Zealand)

The updates include the introduction of a Short Term Graduate Work Visa and an extension of eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa.

New Short Term Graduate Work Visa

Eligible international graduates who have completed study in New Zealand will be able to apply for the Short Term Graduate Work Visa from late 2026.

This visa will provide up to 6 months of open work rights, allowing graduates time to find employment and potentially transition to an Accredited Employer Work Visa. (Immigration New Zealand)

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Hold a NZQCF Level 5–7 qualification completed in New Zealand
  • Have studied full-time for at least 24 weeks
  • Apply within 3 months of their student visa expiring
  • Show at least NZD $5,000 available for living costs
  • Meet health requirements and not have previously held a Short Term Graduate Work Visa or Post Study Work Visa. (Immigration New Zealand)

Short Term Graduate Work Visa holders:

  • Must work for an employer under an employment agreement or contract for services
  • Cannot operate or own a business
  • Cannot sponsor partners for work visas or children for dependent student visas
  • Cannot extend or apply for a second Short Term Graduate Work Visa. (Immigration New Zealand)

Extension of Post Study Work Visa Eligibility

From late 2026, eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa will be extended to graduates who complete a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF Level 7, provided they also hold a Bachelor’s degree (from New Zealand or overseas). (Immigration New Zealand)

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Complete the Graduate Diploma full-time in New Zealand
  • Be enrolled in the qualification for the entire duration
  • Provide evidence of their bachelor’s degree certificate and academic transcript.

The Post Study Work Visa duration will match the time spent studying the Graduate Diploma in New Zealand, up to a maximum of 1 year. (Immigration New Zealand)

Unlike the Short Term Graduate Work Visa, Post Study Work Visa holders may support partners and dependent children for visitor, work, or dependent student visas if requirements are met.
