Changes to the Specific Purpose Work Visa for sports professionals

From 26 May 2025, updates to the Specific Purpose Work Visa (SPWV) will impact sports professionals applying or reapplying:

• Up to 12 months for sports players and professional coaches below national or regional level.
• Up to 36 months for those at national or regional level.

Sports professionals at national or regional level may also extend their stay (up to 36 months in total) if their contract is extended.

Definitions:

• Professional sports player: Paid to train and compete with a New Zealand sports club.
• Professional sports coach: Paid to coach at a New Zealand sports club.
• National or regional level: Competing in top-tier national, trans-Tasman, or international competitions.

Eligibility for SPWV:

• Must be completing a specific purpose or event in New Zealand.
• Must meet standard work visa requirements, including qualifications, health, and character checks.
• Work must be time-bound.
