💡 Purpose: To help reunite families and attract highly skilled migrants by allowing parents of NZ citizens/residents to stay longer.
✈️ What is the Parent Boost Visa?
- A multiple-entry visitor visa for up to 5 years.
- A second 5-year visa may be granted (total stay of up to 10 years), if eligibility continues.
- Not a pathway to residence — for that, the Parent Resident Visa remains available.
- Designed to support families without burdening public services.
🧾 Key Eligibility Requirements
1. Sponsorship:
- Must be sponsored by a biological or adopted child who is an NZ citizen or resident.
- Sponsor must cover:
- Living and accommodation costs
- Health and financial support
- Repatriation or deportation costs if needed
2. Financial Criteria (must meet one):
- Sponsor earns at least NZ median wage (more if sponsoring more than one parent), or
- Parent(s) earn income equal to NZ Superannuation:
- $32,611.28 (single) / $49,552.88 (couple), or
- Parent(s) have personal funds:
- $160,000 (single) / $250,000 (couple)
3. Health Insurance:
- Must cover:
- Emergency care (min. $250,000/year)
- Repatriation & return of remains
- Cancer treatment (min. $100,000)
- Insurance must be valid throughout entire stay.
- Two health checks required: at application and in year 3 (must be completed overseas).
💰 Costs
- Visa Fee:
- $3,000 (standard) / $2,450 (Pacific fee band)
- Tourism Levy: $100
- Year 3 Health Check Fee:
- $325 (standard) / $240 (Pacific fee band)
❗ Notes
- Failing to maintain insurance could result in visa cancellation or deportation.
- This visa does not lead to residence — consider Parent Resident Visa or Parent Retirement Resident Visa if seeking to settle permanently.
