Immigration New Zealand has announced further details about upcoming changes to the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa (SMC), which will take effect from late August 2026.
These reforms aim to make it easier for skilled migrants to gain residence while helping New Zealand employers retain experienced workers and support long-term economic growth.

Two additional pathways will be introduced under the Skilled Migrant Category:
1. Skilled Work Experience Pathway
For migrants working in skilled roles (ANZSCO skill levels 1–3) with significant work experience.
2. Trades and Technician Pathway
For migrants working in specified trades and technician occupations.
These pathways are designed to provide residence options for skilled workers who may not qualify under existing SMC pathways but are already contributing to the New Zealand workforce.
Migrants may qualify if they:
Work in a specified ANZSCO skill level 1–3 trade or technician occupation
Hold a Level 4 or higher relevant qualification
Have at least 4 years of post-qualification work experience
Have completed at least 18 months of skilled work experience in New Zealand, earning at least the SMC median wage.
This pathway recognises the importance of practical skills and trade qualifications in key sectors of the economy.
New Red and Amber occupation lists will help manage immigration risk and ensure pathways remain targeted to genuine labour shortages.
Red List Occupations
Not eligible for the new pathways
Applicants must qualify through other SMC routes (for example through high income, recognised qualifications, or occupational registration)
Amber List Occupations
Eligible for the Skilled Work Experience pathway but must meet additional requirements, including more work experience in New Zealand.
These lists will be reviewed regularly and may change as labour market conditions evolve.
Two major wage-related changes will apply:
Migrants only need to meet the SMC median wage when they begin their skilled work experience, and maintain that level when applying for residence.
A 5-month grace period will apply if the median wage increases before the migrant begins their job.
This change simplifies the wage requirements for residence applications.
From August 2026:
New Zealand qualifications will receive an additional point compared to equivalent overseas qualifications.
Applicants claiming points for Level 8 or Level 9 qualifications will generally need to hold a Bachelor’s degree as well.
Overseas qualifications may require an International Qualification Assessment (IQA).
English test results will be valid for 5 years for applicants who hold recognised occupational registration.
From late August 2026, accountants who can work as Qualified Statutory Accountants in New Zealand and hold membership with CPA Australia will be eligible under the SMC pathway.
Migrants holding an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) may be able to extend their visa for up to 12 months if they need additional time to complete the skilled work experience required for residence.
