Upcoming Changes to the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa

The New Zealand Government has announced important changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa. These updates are designed to help employers retain skilled workers, attract global talent, and support New Zealand’s long-term economic growth.
Two New Residence Pathways
From August 2026, migrants will have two new pathways to residence under the SMC:
🔹 Skilled Work Experience Pathway
For migrants in skilled roles (ANZSCO skill level 1–3) who have:
- At least 5 years of directly relevant work experience
- Including 2 years in New Zealand earning at least 1.1x the median wage
🔹 Trades and Technician Pathway
For migrants in specified trades or technician roles who hold:
- A Level 4 or higher relevant qualification
- At least 4 years of post-qualification experience, including 18 months in New Zealand paid at or above the median wage
These pathways better recognise the value of practical skills and contributions migrants bring to New Zealand’s workforce. Additional eligibility criteria may apply to certain occupations to ensure the programme remains focused on genuine skill needs.
Other Key Changes
- Increased points for NZ university-level qualifications – making it easier for international students and graduates to transition to residence.
- Reduced NZ work experience requirements – most pathways will now require a maximum of 2 years’ New Zealand work experience, down from 3 years.
- Simplified wage requirement – applicants only need to maintain the median wage throughout their required work experience, with no higher wage threshold at the residence application stage.
When Will the Changes Happen?
These updates will take effect from August 2026. Detailed guidance and updated criteria will be published closer to the implementation date.
Why These Changes Matter
The reforms are part of the Government’s Going for Growth programme, which aims to refine work visa settings, improve education outcomes, and support employers and young job seekers across New Zealand.
